It was released as a single in February 1988. The song was most successful in the US, going to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, held out of the top spot by a combination of 'Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car' by Billy Ocean and 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go' by Whitney Houston. 'Devil Inside' then went on to peak at #47 in the United Kingdom, #20 in France, #25 in Ireland, #6 in Australia and #3 in Canada.

Guitarist and saxophone player Kirk Pengilly stated in an interview that he did not like the music video for 'Devil Inside,' because he thought that it was 'too American.'[citation needed]
