EDIT: Oh, he knows about it! Another game he should try that is out now is Evochron Mercenary. You can't get out of the ship, per se, but you can drop a mech and walk around that way. A lot prettier with more diverse combat, a trading system, and the ability to slightly design how your ship look externally.

RE: Ship builder's guide. I believe the Energy Cores determine recharge rate. This becomes especially important as you get more powerful beam and particle weapons, which drain energy as they fire.If you drain all your energy, you can't shoot and you can't jump.

(notice that your weapons charge drops immediately after a jump).I believe each core improves recharge rate by 10%, and if you add an energy module you'll get another 10%. However, some people have been saying they haven't seen any benefit beyond 5 cores. This may be a bug, so results may vary.
